 Just a quick clarification:

Some appointments have a special requirement of NA 5+.

Does this mean the applicant must have an NA of 5 or higher, or is it referring to the modifier to the die roll that is provided by a high NA?

From the Briny Rules:

For certain posts (as shown on the appointments table) naval ability will modify the roll:

NA 1 = −1
NA 2 to 4 = 0
NA 5 to 7 = +1
NA 8 to 9 = +2
NA 10 = +3

These modifiers apply to the role if the post is in the gift of an NPC, but surely no roll is required if the granting authority is a Player?

Also, can a character hold two appointments?

For example, could a Lieutenant be both the Ship's Adjutant and the Aide to an Admiral?

Or could a Midshipman be both Captain of the Top and the Captain's Secretary? (Easier to perform as both are roles performed on ship, and arguably are duties that can be performed at different times of the day).

Clearly the nuances have great effect on what one can aspire to do!

 I too am curious to learn how anyone can obtain an Naval Ability higher than 6 without having a rank above Lieutenant.

 Per the rules,
"A character can only hold one appointment at a time, with the exception of MPs and the Attorney-General."

I'll consult on the NA question and get back to you.

 Thanks for pointing it out, the clarification I need to make is to remove "for certain posts." The NA additional modifiers are for all naval posts, when a die roll is used to get it. Some posts have a minimum NA of 5, which a PC appointer must abide by.
Rachael, a lieutenant can improve NA in battle.
