 Is volunteering a pre-monthly action, or should it be ordered in the first week of a month?

Are campaigns resolved at the end of the season, or at the end of each month. I think at the end of the season, but if so, does one who volunteers only in the last month of a season get the same benefits and penalties as one who goes for the whole season?

 Volunteering is pre-monthly. You could do other pre-monthly actions, such as take out a loan or fight a duel. Those at sea do not have weekly actions.
If you order to volunteer in week 1, we will treat it as if you ordered it for a pre-monthly action. If you order to volunteer in weeks 2, 3 or 4, you will have "missed the battle" that month, but will be with the ship the for the rest of that season.
For the upcoming February turn, if you volunteer you will be in the February battle and then back in London for March as March is the start of a new season. Then you could volunteer in March and be at sea March, April and May.
Campaigns are resolved as a part of that month. One season has three battles; one per month. A volunteer in February gets the outcome of one battle; a volunteer in March will be in three battles (March, April and May). Volunteering in April means two battles, etc.
