I'm beginning to believe this game is actually an exquisitely sublime study on game loyalty.

Adding as we get orders in — I get a lot of character requests who don't end up playing.

Can characters borrow money to pay a debt? - ie when the debt is due, borrow a new capital to repay the old one and hence only have to find the ten percent interest rather than the whole sum?
This way a man might live forever in debt to a shylock, but at least he only has to earn tens of guineas every six months rather than hundreds.

I have been in games where this has not been allowed.. other than to borrow money from another source.. such as a character. However.. in theory there is no reason why not, but I would place a large SP penalty for doing so as its far to much munchkin like.

It is listed as available at 100/SL max in the rules.
Payback is in months with penalties if not done.

Check the Table of Contents on the latest version of the rules.

I've also been in games where it was not allowed. Loan max is 100X sl. So a SL2 borrows 200. When he becomes SL3, he can borrow another 100, with the 110 due 6 months from there. How he spends it is his own business.
A loan must be paid off in full on or before the due date.

I've been in games where the interest is payable from the first borrowing, regardless of how many SL increases the players had and borrowed on the basis of in the meantime. I think this is the better way to go to be honest.

OK, in january I'm SL 2 so I can borrow 200. As a result of January's play, I go up to SL3, so in february I can borrow an additional 100. However, the date of repayment for the 200+100+30interest is still 3/6 months (depending on what game you're in!) from January.
