I'm beginning to believe this game is actually an exquisitely sublime study on game loyalty.

Ok.. so if I have only 1 knack and I dont want to use that knack all the time, but want to alternate its use. How do I write this into my duelling orders?

Based on what I have seen so far, either "Attack-<knack name>- repeat" or with the knack name first, if you wish to open with it.. Anything that isn't a knack is simply an "attack".

but surely then i would be using my knack for every attack?

or do I have to place a simple attack with no knack used for when I dont want to use it?

example

attack (no knack)
riposte (adv knack)
attack (no knack)
dirty trick (basic knack)

otherwise say if I only knew dirty trick.. then I would have to use it for every attack and thus loose a stack load of SP.

You do not need any knacks to make an attack.

To make an attack you roll against your swordsmanship skill, this is modifed by your weapon choice and any applicable knack you decide to use.

So you might write.
Use Sabre, Surrender at 60 endurance.
Use flashing steel on every odd numbered round.

Alternativly you can write it like:
Use Sabre, Surrender at 60 endurance.
1. Attack
2. use flashing steel
3. Attack
4. Attack
5. Use Flashing Steel

Repeat until finish (meaning you continue to use these orders until the duel ends)

Just because you use a knack it does not mean you do not attack, it is just a further modifier to your action.
You do not need to use any knacks at all come to that.

By DF are you referring to the dirty trick?
That was due to my (apparently common) misunderstanding of how it all works. It seemed like a character needed a knack in order to duel at all so I allowed two to each, but when it was clarified that a basic attack was allowed. So I reduced the "free" knack to one, although really all knacks should be learned with training.
